We had success on our first attempt to trap turtles at Lakeshore this year! We caught one Stinkpot/Musk turtle (sternotherus odoratus) in our trap. Unfortunately, he had swallowed a fishing hook before we caught him, so we are consulting with our partners at DSC to see if there is anything we can do to help.
It is important that our students learn about the impact that we (humans) have on the environment, and how they can help! In addition to gathering data on the turtles we trap, this will also be part of our focus this year.
The students that actually got in the water and set/retrieved the trap did an excellent job! I am proud of them for conducting our research like scientists. Any child who wants to set or retrieve a trap WILL get the opportunity, although it might be a while with 29 students!
Please, talk with your child about their experience at Lakeshore. We will go back one day next week to set another trap!
