Today we retrieved the turtle trap we set yesterday, and we caught a Stinkpot turtle (Sternotherus odoratus)! We measured it and took lots of pictures! We were also very lucky that our DSC contact, Dr. Lugthart was also at the park with his students and was able to help us identify the species right away. He told us that they are typically bottom-dwellers and like to bury themselves in the mud and sludge, which is why it appears quite dirty! The kids were all very excited that we FINALLY caught a turtle, and cannot wait to go back! We will not set traps next week, due to CRCT, but we will set them the following week weather permitting. Thank you for allowing your children to go on this journey with me--I think they are all learning to branch out of their comfort zones and enjoy the nature in our backyard!

Thank you! We ran into him unexpectedly, and he was more than willing to explain our turtle to our kids and his class. We are very lucky to have him as a resource!

This thrills my soul to know our kids are having this experience and our teachers are making it happen!! This is not just "real world" as is often said. This is REALLY THE WORLD.

Thank you! I am sorry we couldn't do it sooner! The kids are lining up to get in the water and help, and parents have been very supportive of us doing it. I think we can really do great things with Lakeshore as our capacity expands. The kids are excited about learning and THAT is exciting to see!
