Next week we will be beginning content review for CRCT. We will start reviewing the Solar System in Science, and our student teacher, Miss Evans, will teach a lesson on Wednesday. We will also be finishing work on classifying quadrilaterals and angles, and create a "Geometry Town". We will also work on finishing the end of 9 weeks assessments I mentioned last week, including a final pass on Persuasive writing. In Social Studies, we will begin reviewing Native Americans. As the week progresses, we may move into Explorers. We will NOT have new vocabulary this week, but will have new words beginning March 17.
We will be having a vocabulary quiz on Latin Roots tomorrow! We have been working with our words in context in class, creating compound sentences using conjunctions, matching vocabulary, etc. As a reminder, this is NOT a basic spelling test! I would love for students to know how to spell these words, but I am more interested in having them know the meanings!
We will also have a retest on Sound. We created summaries of information this morning on Sound using the textbook. Students who were with Ms. Conway will have the opportunity to complete their summaries this afternoon. If they do not finish, they will bring the textbook home to help them study tonight! Summary Questions for Review Thanks for all you do to help your students at home! It truly does make a difference! This week we are continuing our study of Latin Roots. We will have a vocabulary quiz on these on Friday. They will have to use them correctly, either in a passage or a sentence. We are also continuing our Geometry unit, using types of lines and angles to identify 2-D shapes. We will have a culminating task completed IN CLASS on Monday, March 10, creating a "Geometry Town" using lines and angles/shapes we are classifying this week. We will be working on our final Persuasive writing pass later this week/early next week that will be graded for the report card.
We are currently reviewing Sound, as many students did poorly on the quiz. I will retest on this on Friday. The students have a list of Sound vocabulary in their Science journals that may help them on the retest. See the list HERE. They will NOT have a separate quiz on this vocabulary, as this is for review of content. We will also have a short answer assessment over Westward Expansion, the Women of Sufferage, and Technological Advances of the 1800's. I will ask one or two short answer questions on each topic for them to show synthesis of the knowledge in addition to using webquests/activities completed in class towards their grade. As the end of the term approaches (next Friday, March 14), we will also be giving performance assessments in class over the standards we have covered earlier this 9 weeks. **THESE ARE NOT SCHEUDLED, BUT WILL BE FIT IN AS TIME ALLOWS! Some areas being assessed in Math include 2x2 digit multiplication, 4 digit divided by 1 digit division, word problems using multiplication and division, as well as measurement units, and comparing decimals to hundredths. We will also have culminating assessments in Reading/ELA over meanings of unknown words/phrases from mythology, explaining cause and effect , main idea, and order of events in non-fiction text, using prepositional phrases in writing and speaking, and determining meaning of unknown words based on their Greek or Latin roots. Your child can review for these using IXL and Study Island. I will not send these home until after grades have been posted, as they are the final assessment of knowledge. I will also use classroom performance/work and observation to help determine their grade on a standard (this one test does not determine everything). Finally, Field Day will be here before we know it! We are collecting orders for T-shirts through next Friday, March 14. If you need an order form, you can print one HERE. Coach Weaver also sent duplicates home today with students that requested one. We read about three technological advances of the 1800's in class today. Students wrote a short summary of information about each, including when it was invented, why it was needed, and how it impacted people in the 1800's. We will compare the three inventions during class tomorrow and discuss which invention had the greatest impact on society at the time. I have attached the PDFs of the sheets below.
This morning we began our Geometry study by reviewing a foldable we made earlier this year on lines, angles, rays, points, and types of lines (perpendicular/parallel/intersecting). We then made a foldable organizer about quadrilaterals, focusing on the mathematical definitions of each, including angles and types of lines in each. We will be working on this for the rest of the week, adding in angles and types of triangles as we continue working on Geometry. Your child can bring these home to study, but please send them back each day so we can use them in class!
Today we reviewed conjunctions, using the FANBOYS acronym. We also began discussing compound sentences, using conjunctions. We also began working on our Perspective writings in conjunction with our clay shoes created in Art. We are telling the story of our shoe/moccasin, beginning with its creation and the shoe's journey/life within the tribe (Inuit, Kwaquitl, Hopi, Seminole, Nez Perce, or Pawnee).
We will be working with Latin Roots words for vocabulary over the next two weeks. I found some roots that we commonly use in the English language that were also used in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I hope by connecting the Latin Roots to literature, students will be able to learn the meanings easier! I am attaching a link to the list of words that we will be using for the next two weeks below.
Latin Roots (from Harry Potter!) I have created a document to help focus your child's work at home on IXL. The skills listed have been, or shortly will be covered in class. Please use this as a guide to help your child get the most out of IXL!
